Bacteria are the main cause of bad breath

The main cause of bad breath:

Bacteria: plaque and tartar

Bacteria living in the oral cavity decompose food debris, releasing volatile compounds with an unpleasant odor. The more bacteria, the stronger the unpleasant odor.
Bacteria live both on the surface of the teeth and deep under the gums, in the gum pockets.

Bacteria on the surface form plaque. At first, it is soft and easily removed when brushing your teeth.
If plaque is not completely cleaned, it accumulates, compresses and turns into tartar. Tartar can no longer be removed at home, so the smell does not go away even after brushing your teeth.

The main cause of bad breath:
Some bacteria multiply under the gums - in the gum pockets. Tartar can also form there, which is not accessible to either a brush or a rinse. Even professional hygiene at the dentist does not affect pockets deeper than 1-2 mm.
Therefore, bacteria freely multiply in tartar under the gums, and cause bad breath.

To eliminate the problem, you need to contact a periodontist who specializes in the treatment of gums and cleaning of gum pockets.
Please note! Tartar and the bacteria that live in it are the main cause of inflammatory gum diseases: gingivitis and periodontitis.
Important! Do not hesitate to contact a doctor if you have bad breath. There are no minor symptoms! Treatment at an early stage is simple and quick, helps to maintain the health of teeth and gums. The main task is to prevent or stop periodontitis and the irreversible changes associated with it: deepening of pockets, gum recession (exposure of the necks of the teeth), loss of bone tissue.

Gingivitis

Gingivitis is an inflammatory disease of the gums, which begins due to the accumulation of microbial plaque on the teeth and in the cervical area (at the border with the gum). Bacteria secrete toxins that irritate the gum tissue. Swelling and redness appear, the vessels become fragile, and bleeding often occurs during brushing. Due to the accumulation of bacteria, an unpleasant odor from the mouth appears - the first symptom of gingivitis. At this stage, the gum damage is small, the gum pockets are not enlarged. Gingivitis is easily treated.
Important! Without treatment, gingivitis develops into a more severe gum disease - periodontitis.

Periodontitis

Periodontitis is a serious gum disease that can lead to tooth loss in the later stages. Periodontitis develops due to the proliferation of bacteria and the formation of tartar under the gums - in the gum pockets.
Due to the inflammatory process, all periodontal tissues suffer: gums, periodontal ligament that holds the tooth in the bone, bone tissue.
At the initial stage, symptoms include: unpleasant odor, bleeding gums, deepening of the gum pockets.
At later stages, gum recession is added (the necks of the teeth are exposed), bone loss, and tooth mobility. There may be purulent discharge.

Treatment
for bad breath

An unpleasant odor can be a symptom of several diseases (gingivitis, periodontitis, rarely - non-dental diseases). Therefore, before starting treatment, it is important to conduct diagnostics, make a diagnosis and identify the causes of the disease

1) Diagnosis of bad breath

Diagnostics are carried out to identify inflammatory diseases of the gums or accumulation of plaque and tartar, in which bacteria can multiply.

During diagnostics, all periodontal tissues, gums and the oral cavity as a whole are examined. CT diagnostics are also performed to assess the condition of the bone and check for hidden internal inflammatory processes.
Diagnostics consists of 7 stages and takes 1 hour
A treatment plan is developed based on the information received.

2) Treatment for bad breath

To eliminate the unpleasant odor, it is necessary to clean the teeth and gum pockets from bacteria and tartar. The complexity of treatment varies at different stages of the disease.
  • Treatment for gingivitis

Only standard dental cleaning is performed. The surface of the teeth and the cervical area are cleaned from plaque and tartar. This eliminates the source of inflammation and unpleasant odor. Additionally, medicinal antiseptic treatment of the gums and oral cavity is performed.
  • Treatment for periodontitis

With periodontitis, tartar and bacteria accumulate deep under the gums. Therefore, scaling is performed - cleaning of gum pockets, removing all deposits and bacteria that have accumulated over the years. Thanks to this, not only is the unpleasant odor eliminated, but the development of periodontitis is also stopped.
The roots of the teeth are carefully polished so that plaque accumulates less in the future.
Antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and healing agents are used for medicinal treatment.
