Gingivitis is an inflammatory disease of the gums.

It is easily treated, but in advanced stages it develops into periodontitis, a more serious disease with severe symptoms.
Symptoms we can help you with:
Depending on the stage of the disease, symptoms may vary, usually 2 or more symptoms occur simultaneously:
  • Bleeding gums
  • Bad breath
  • Swelling, redness, change in gum contour
  • Pain when brushing teeth
  • Whitish coating on gums
  • Loose gums, separation from teeth

The main cause of gingivitis

The main cause of gingivitis:

Bacterial infection

Most often, gingivitis occurs due to poor oral hygiene. Bacteria developing on the teeth and gums are not completely cleaned out, forming plaque. This is an infectious environment that leads to inflammation of the gum tissue. If the problem occurs in one tooth, it gradually spreads to the entire oral cavity.
The inflammatory process leads to swelling and redness of the tissue. The vessels become more fragile, the gums bleed easily when brushing teeth.
The accumulation of bacterial plaque leads to the appearance of an unpleasant odor from the mouth.
You can suspect gingivitis if bleeding and an unpleasant odor do not disappear for several days.

Dental plaque
Tartar
If left untreated, gingivitis develops into periodontitis.
Over time, plaque becomes denser and it becomes impossible to remove it with a toothbrush. In advanced stages, plaque turns into tartar, which gradually settles not only on the teeth, but also under the gums. This leads to the development of periodontitis - a disease with irreversible consequences for the teeth and gums.

Plaque accumulation can increase due to crowded teeth, smoking, and weakened immunity.
Please note! The connection between gingivitis and hormonal changes has been proven. The disease occurs in 80% of teenagers, as well as pregnant women. However, without treatment, the disease does not go away even when the hormonal background is restored.

Types of gingivitis

Gingivitis doesn't always look the same. It's important to differentiate the different types of the disease to find effective treatment.

Stages of gum disease progression

  • Gingivitis

    The initial stage of gum inflammation. Occurs due to plaque and tartar accumulation in the gum area. There is no pathological deepening of the pockets yet.

    Symptoms: bleeding gums when brushing, swelling, redness, and sometimes an unpleasant odor.

  • Mild periodontitis

    Inflammation from the cervical area spreads deeper and begins to destroy periodontal tissues: gums, ligaments, and bone. The gingival margin separates from the tooth, creating periodontal pockets up to 3 mm deep. Bone loss begins.

    Symptoms: bleeding gums, foul odor, slight tooth mobility (can only be diagnosed by a doctor), and possible discomfort and mild pain when chewing.
  • Moderate periodontitis
    A severe form of periodontal disease. Periodontal pockets are deeper, approximately 4-5 mm. Bone loss can reach up to 30%. Periodontal fibers are significantly damaged.

    Symptoms: inflammation and swelling of the gums, tenderness and bleeding even with light pressure, increased bad breath, tooth mobility upon palpation, and increased tooth sensitivity due to exposed necks.
  • Severe periodontitis
    A severe form of the disease in which the primary structures supporting the tooth are destroyed. Periodontal pockets are deep, more than 6 mm. Bone loss reaches 50% or more. Periodontal fibers are almost or completely destroyed. The gums are severely inflamed, with recession (root exposure).

    Symptoms: constant bleeding, strong odor, pain when chewing, tooth mobility, sometimes a sensation of movement, and possible gum abscesses.

Симптомы гингивита
  • Redness, swelling
    • Classic signs of an inflammatory process arise due to an infectious lesion.
  • Bleeding gums
    • Bacteria weaken the walls of blood vessels. Capillaries become more fragile and break under slight pressure.
  • Bad breath
    • It appears due to plaque or tartar and the bacteria that multiply there.
  • Sore gums
    • Toxins that accumulate as a result of bacterial activity cause tissue thinning and irritation.
How Gingivitis Turns into Periodontitis
It is known that without treatment, gingivitis eventually develops into a more severe disease - periodontitis. There is no clear time frame for this, for some it may take years, for others - a few months are enough. Everything depends on the state of the immune system and oral hygiene.

Gradually, the gums begin to peel off from the tooth due to inflammation and bacteria from the cervical area get under the gum. There they multiply, contributing to the increase in periodontal pockets (space under the gums). Tartar accumulates in these pockets, which is the main cause of periodontitis.

Treatment of gingivitis

Treatment of gingivitis in the early stages is very effective. Therefore, it is recommended to consult a doctor at the first symptoms: bleeding gums and bad breath.

Consultation for gingivitis

A periodontist conducts a consultation.
During the consultation, we assess the general condition of the oral cavity, identify affected areas, and locally measure the depth of periodontal pockets in areas of inflammation.

The consultation includes:
  1. Oral cavity assessment – check for inflammation, microtrauma, ulcers, and visible foci of infection (affected teeth, fillings).
  2. Gum condition assessment – check for redness, inflammation, and swelling. Gum height is assessed (for signs of recession) and the condition of the papillae. The degree of bleeding and the presence of pus are determined.
  3. Plaque assessment – evaluate the presence of plaque, its quantity, and areas of accumulation.
  4. Consultation, appointments, and recommendations from a periodontist.

Treatment of gingivitis

Treatment consists of eliminating the infectious environment and relieving the inflammatory process.
Treatment consists of the following stages:
  1. Cleaning the surface of the teeth from plaque and tartar, removing bioblank;
  2. Cleaning the cervical area (connection of teeth and gums) from plaque and tartar;
  3. Manual cleaning of periodontal pockets with curettes;
  4. Medicinal treatment of gums and gingival pockets;
  5. Home hygiene training, selection of hygiene tools.
Additionally, the doctor identifies the cause of the disease and gives recommendations for its elimination.

Treatment results
The photo shows severe cases of the disease, already at stage 1-4 of periodontitis.
It is possible to assess the damage caused by the disease.
After treatment, the results are noticeable: removal of tartar, inflammation, improvement of the color and shape of the gums, increase in gum volume, closure of recession.
At the same time, patients are in the SPT stage - maintenance therapy, recovery continues.
